FORGE uses the Essence textures to generate IFFs (or TIFFs or JPEGs or
PPMs), so it's compatible with any program that can load one of these
formats (like LightWave.) It can also generate a sequence of images
to form an animation of a texture.
The textures and the variety of controls over their appearance are
great, and unlike a library of pre-rendered images, you can tailor
the images FORGE makes to fit your specific needs.
A few minor gripes I have with the program:
* It uses a rather annoying method of saving the image to disk: it
opens the file, writes a bit, closes the file, opens the file,
writes a bit, closes the file, ...and so on, constantly grinding
the hard drive for hours on end (or days, if you're rendering a
sequence.)
This also makes it impossible to render directly to the PAR, for
example, or to use SENTRY and other programs that watch a directory
for a completed image. (FORGE has some excellent AREXX hooks,
however, and it's easy to get around this problem by writing a
script that does something to an image after it's done rendering.)
* The "Repetition Map" feature (to make seamless, repeating image-maps)
doesn't quite live up to it's glowing description in the manual.
* I've heard that other people have had better luck, but I've never
been able to get through to APEX for tech support via the phone or
by EMail.
(There is a review of FORGE in the August LWPro.)
